Composition and Antimicrobial Activity of the Essential Oils of Five Taxa of Sideritis from Greece

Abstract: The chemical compositions of the essential oils obtained from the aerial parts of five taxa of Sideritis were analyzed using various GC-MS techniques. A total of 99 different compounds was identified, and significant differences (qualitative and quantitative) were observed between the samples. The in vitro antimicrobial activity of the essential oils against six bacteria and three fungi is also reported.

“…Neilreichii [22] have been reported. Moreover, the antibacterial properties of caryophyllene oxide have been revealed previously [23], while 1,8-cineole and camphor are also known to possess some antimicrobial activities [20,21]. Thus, the antibacterial properties of the essential oils A. taygetea and A. frasii are probably connected with their high content of 1,8-cineol and camphor.…”

“…The differences between the means in the same lines by the same letter are not statistically significant p>0.05 , *** = p<0.0016 mm: no inhibition, NT: not tested; But this species were not studied extensively [20,21]. However, the antimicrobial and histological data is sporadic and they are not comparable [20,21].…”

“…A renewed interest in natural preservation appears to be stimulated by present food safety concerns, growing problems with microbial resistance, and a rise in production of minimally processed food, together with green image policies of food industries. Abundant reports have documented the antifungal effects (Aligiannis et al, 2001; Thompson, 1989) of plant essential oils. The cellular effects of aflatoxins may regulate by natural products and evidence suggests that aromatic organic compounds of spices can control the production of aflatoxins (Chatterjee, 1990).…”

“…These plants comprise 8 species and 7 subspecies (Strid and Tan, 1991) and are often used in Mediterranean countries as tea infusions, flavouring agents, and for medicinal purposes due to their anti-inflammatory, antirheumatic, and antimicrobial activity (Villar et al, 1986;Diaz et al, 1988;Aligiannis et al, 2001). Sideritis scardica Griseb.…”
