“…The presence of microphagous detritus feeders: burrowers and surface deposit feeders is typical for the soft bottom (Gallardo et al 1988;Gambi and Busotti 1999;San Martin et al 2000;Sicinski 2004). A dominance of macrophagous motile polychaetes, herbivores or predators had already been observed on macroalgal holdfasts and thalli in the Antarctic as well as in other regions of the world (Arnaud 1974;Rios et al 2007;Fraschetti et al 2002).…”

“…Furthermore, Bullivant (1967b) described the ''Deep Shelf Mud Bottom Assemblage'' dominated by polychaetes, which was found close to Coulman Island. In their quantitative analysis of the Ross Sea benthos in 1994 and 1995, Gambi and Bussotti (1999) excluded the very few colonial organisms (sponges, cnidarians, and bryozoans), which were found in the samples. From there a comparison of the two studies should be simplified, still the different gear used has to be taken into account.…”

“…While the sample areas were distributed in shallower waters along the Victoria-Land coast, only three stations in depths of 450, 580, and 810 m were sampled (Gambi and Bussotti 1999).…”

“…Even though Amphipoda play a very important role in the Southern Ocean benthic communities, in the majority of ecological studies they are identified only to the order level (e.g. Sáiz-Salinas et al 1997;Gambi and Bussotti 1999;Barnes et al 2006;Rehm et al 2006Rehm et al , 2011Glover et al 2008;Saiz et al 2008;Cummings et al 2010). Taxonomical studies are time consuming and difficult, which led several authors to search for Abstract Amphipoda belong to enormously diverse benthic invertebrate groups in the Southern Ocean, playing a very important role in the Antarctic communities.…”
