Composite concrete‐timber structures

Abstract: Composite concrete–timber building and bridge structures are gaining in importance throughout the world. The approach is to pour fresh concrete over the timber. Mechanical linkage between hardened concrete and timber is provided through keyed indentations in the timber or various sorts of mechanical fasteners inserted in the timber before the concrete is poured. The technique is commented on from research and design points of view.

“…[6] ISO 6891:1983 Standard code [7] is clear with respect to the procedure of loading and measuring slides, however, it only recommends that the dimensions and types are equivalent to the actual conditions. This standard was intended for wood structures and not wood and concrete, but its procedures were cited by Ceccotti [2] and applied in mixed structures.…”

“…For execution facilities, the concrete was kept in the internal part of the specimen. Ceccotti [2] suggests a possible specimen for determination of the load versus displacement diagram of the shear connectors (Fig. 5).…”

“…A TCC bridge deck has a much higher bending strength and lower deflections than that of a timber (non-composite) deck with similar dimensions (Ceccotti 2002;Weaver et al 2004), which are important mechanical advantages of TCC structures. Additionally, the reinforced concrete slab of the TCC deck assures continuity in the longitudinal and transverse directions and the transverse rigidity required to distribute the live load amongst the timber elements (Simon et al 2008).…”

“…Indeed, the lightness of the timber and its good tensile strength coupled with the inertia and compression strength of the concrete, through connectors, makes it possible to obtain light and resistant structures while maximizing the mechanical performances of each [1].…”
