This study evaluated the nutritional value of sugarcane varieties in relation to nitrogen fertilization. The varieties studied were RB 863129, RB 867515, and RB 92579, and nitrogen fertilizer was applied at doses of 0, 60, 80, 120, and 140 kg N ha -1 . The experiment was divided into two stages: i) Year I -plant cane, when the yield and nutritional quality of the three sugarcane varieties were evaluated; ii) Years II and III, when and the effect of nitrogen fertilization on the nutritional quality of the first and second ratoon crops of the same varieties was evaluated. In plant cane the yield (t ha -1 ) and DM (dry matter) and CP (crude protein) contents were higher for the RB 863129 variety. There was no difference between the varieties regarding their NDF (neutral detergent fiber) and ADF (acid detergent fiber) contents and IVDMD (in vitro dry matter digestibility). In the first and second ratoon crops, there was a difference between the varieties and fertilizer doses for the evaluated parameters, with the exception of the DM content and IVDMD, which were influenced by the varieties, doses of N, and cutting years. The RB 92579 variety showed the best yield of the two ratoon crops (131 t ha -1 of stems) and the best nutritional parameters (26% ADF, 41% NDF, 2.4% CP, and 69.4% IVDMD). The sugarcane yield and its nutritional quality can be influenced by the cutting year and nitrogen fertilization management system and by the variety type. Key words: In vitro digestibility. Animal nutrition. Saccharum officinarum. ResumoEste estudo avaliou o valor nutritivo de variedades de cana-de-açúcar em função da adubação nitrogenada. As variedades estudadas foram RB 863129, RB 867515 e RB 92579, e as doses nitrogenadas 0, 60, 80, 120 e 140 kg N ha -1 . O experimento foi dividido em duas etapas: i) Ano I -Cana-planta: avaliou-se a produtividade e qualidade nutricional de três variedades de cana-de-açúcar; ii) Anos II e III: avaliou-se a influência da adubação nitrogenada na qualidade nutricional da primeira e segunda soca das mesmas variedades. Na cana-planta foram determinados o teor de Brix e a relação FDN/Brix. Para a cana-planta, a produtividade (t ha -1 ) e os teores de MS e PB, foram superiores (P < 0.05) para a variedade RB 863129. Não houve diferença (P < 0,05) entre as variedades para os teores de FDN e FDA e para a DIVMS. Na primeira e segunda soqueira houve diferença (P < 0,05) entre variedades e doses de adubação para os parâmetros avaliados, com exceção do teor de MS e digestibilidade in vitro, que foram influenciados (P < 0,05) pelas variedades, doses de N e anos de corte. A variedade RB 92579 apresentou nas duas soqueiras a melhor produtividade (131 t ha -1 de colmos), aliada aos melhores parâmetros nutricionais (FDA 26%, FDN 41%, PB 2,4% e DIVMS 69,4%). A produtividade da cana-de-açúcar, assim com a sua qualidade nutricional, pode ser influenciada pelo manejo da adubação nitrogenada, ano de corte e pela variedade. Resumo -Objetivou-se com este trabalho, avaliar o comportamento agronômico de combinações genômicas oriundas do cruzamento entre capim-elefante (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) e milheto (Pennisetum glaucum (E.) Leek), visando determinar o potencial de Pennisetum glaucum para o melhoramento da qualidade forrageira do capim-elefante. Três cultivares de capim-elefante e 11 combinações genômicas foram avaliadas para produção de matéria verde total (PMV), produção de matéria seca total (PMS), percentagem de matéria seca (%MS), produção de matéria seca de folhas (PMSF), produção de matéria seca de caule (PMSC), relação caule/folha (RFC), altura (ALT), vigor fenotípico (VF), número de perfilhos (NP), fibra em detergente ácido (FDA), fibra em detergente neutro (FDN), proteína bruta (PB) e digestibilidade in vitro de matéria seca (DIVMS). Excetuando RFC e NP, todas as demais características apresentaram diferenças significativas para os genótipos (p < 0,05), indicando variabilidade genética entre os genótipos avaliados. A combinação genômica HCM-5x-2 destacou-se entre os pentaploides quanto à produção de matéria seca de forragem e a combinação genômica HCM-4x-2 destacou-se entre os tetraploides para a mesma característica. O efeito na melhoria da qualidade forrageira em Pennisetum através da introgressão de características favoráveis do milheto foi evidenciado pelo melhor desempenho das combinações genômicas pentaploides para características bromatológicas, mostrando o potencial das mesmas para inclusão em programas de melhoramento genético. Forragem-qualidade.Abstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the agronomic performance of genomic combinations from elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) and pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (E.) Leek), in order to determine the Pennisetum glaucum potencial as a germoplasm for elephant grass improvement. Three cultivars and eleven genomic combinations were evaluated for fresh forage production (PMV), total dry matter production (PMS), dry matter ratio (%MS), leaves dry matter production (PMSF), stem dry matter production (PMSC), leaf/stem ratio (RFC), height (ALT), plant vigor (VF), number of tillers (NP), acid detergent fiber ratio (FDA), Neutral detergent fiber ratio (FDN), crude protein ratio (PB) and in vitro dry matter digestibility (DIVMS). All characteristics, except for RFC and NP, showed significant difference for genotypes (p < 0.05), point out to the genetic variability among the evaluated genotypes. As to forage dry matter production, the HCM-5x-2 genomic combination outstood the pentaploids while the HCM-4x-2 outstood the tetraployds. The improvement of forage quality in Pennisetum through the introgression of favorable traits to the millet was enhanced by the improvement of genomic pentaploids combinations peformance for bromatologic traits, what showed their potential for being included in genetic breeding programs.

Biometric and chemical characteristics of sugarcane varieties for use as forage in limiting soil water conditions

-This study aimed to evaluate the biometric and chemical characteristics of five sugarcane varieties (RB 863129, RB 867515, RB 92579, RB 943365, and RB 98710) grown in a semi-arid climate for use as forage. The experiment was designed as randomized blocks, in a 5 × 2 factorial arrangement (five sugarcane varieties and two evaluation times, 407 and 483 days). Response variables included dry matter productivity, morphological characteristics, chemical composition, digestibility, and ratios among neutral detergent fiber (NDF), Brix, and Pol. For the biometric analyses, there was an interaction effect between the evaluated varieties and harvest times on the variables fresh matter yield, uncovered internodes, and stalk density (MID -middle internode density). Regarding stalk density (MID), at 407 days, there was no significant difference among the varieties (1.19 g cm −3). For the fractionated parts, there was an effect of harvest time on the amount of fresh matter and dry matter of tops produced, which was highest at 407 days of age. A significant difference was detected among the varieties for contents of dry matter and total digestible nutrients. The variable in vitro neutral detergent fiber digestibility was influenced by the time, decreasing by 53.62 g kg −1 at 483 days. In the analysis of Brix and Pol yields per hectare, it was observed that variables ton of Brix per hectare and ton of sucrose per hectare averaged 15.12 and 10.14 t ha −1 , respectively, and the NDF:Brix and NDF:Pol ratios were higher for variety RB 863129, with 2.93 and 3.68, respectively. Variety RB 867515 is suggested for forage production in semi-arid conditions, as it is best adapted to the local soil-climatic conditions and to the water deficit, especially at 407 days.
