The spring forage emptiness is an obstacle to the development of Brazilian livestock, including in the Bioma Pampa region. Feed strategies for this period contributed to the development of livestock and to the conservation of the biome. The objective of this work was to know the nutritional potential of forages during spring forage for use as strategies in the forage planning. The experiment had a completely randomized design, with ten forages and four replicates. The chemical composition, in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) and the total digestible nutrient content (NTD) of elephant grass, brachiaria cultivars Convert and Marandu, Tifton 68; diploid and tetraploid ryegrass; red, white and arrowleaf clover; and bird’s-foot trefoil. The grasses had a higher proportion of fibrous constituents, and lower levels of NDT and DMD, thus, lower nutritional value. Negative correlation between mineral matter and fibrous constituents with CP, TDN and IVDMD, was observed. Forages studied can be used as pasture alternatives for ruminants in the spring forage emptiness of the Pampa, Brazil, however, the strategy of using them should be a pasture planning.

ResumoA pesquisa teve como objetivo estudar o comportamento ingestivo de vacas da raça Holandesa em lactação, durante o período estival, em pastagens constituídas por capim-elefante (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) e espécies de crescimento espontâneo, consorciadas com trevo branco (Trifolium repens L.) ou amendoim forrageiro (Arachis pintoi Krap. & Greg.). Foram feitas avaliações em três pastejos (dezembro, fevereiro e abril). Para cada avaliação utilizaram-se seis vacas entre o segundo e o quinto mês de lactação. O registro de dados foi realizado das 18 às 06 horas e das 08 às 16 horas, a cada 10 minutos. Os parâmetros comportamentais observados foram o tempo de pastejo em capimelefante, pastejo das espécies estabelecidas na entrelinha, pastejo total (pastejo do capim-elefante e da forragem na entrelinha), ruminação e ócio. O tempo médio de pastejo da entrelinha foi de 3h 48 min e 2h 9 min para os consórcios com o trevo branco e amendoim forrageiro, respectivamente, sendo superior (P<0,05) para a primeira mistura de forrageiras. O tempo médio de pastejo diário do capim elefante foi de 5h 32 min e 6h 27 min, para os respectivos consórcios, não havendo diferença entre eles. Para os tempos de ruminação e ócio houve similaridade entre as pastagens estudadas. Palavras-chave: capim-elefante; etologia; pastejo rotacionado; valor nutritivo Abstract This research aimed to study the behavior of Holstein lactating cows, during the warm-season on a pasture constituted by elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) and spontaneous growing species intercropped with white clover (Trifolium repens L.) or forage peanut (Arachis pintoi Krap & Greg.). Evaluations were taken during three grazing in December, February, and April. Six cows between the second and fifth lactation month were used for each evaluation. The data were recorded at a 10 min-interval, from 6 P.M. to 6 A.M. and from 8 A.M. to 4 P.M. The grazing time on elephant grass, on species established in space between lines, total grazing (elephant grass and species established in space between lines), rumination and idleness were the behavioral parameters observed. Context Concentrate supplementation at high rates represents a method used to improve the productive efficiency of the beef cattle grazing system. Further, the use of additives increases the nutrient-use efficiency of diets. In this sense, it is important to determine the impact of additives in grazing beef cattle fed with high-concentrate supplements to determine the appropriate management practices of the system. Aim This study aimed to evaluate the feeding behaviour of Nellore beef cattle (Bos taurus indicus) in intensive finishing on pasture and fed with different additives. Methods Twenty-eight Nellore cattle [with initial bodyweight (BW) of 480 ± 5 kg and age of 24 ± 2 months] were finished on Urochloa brizantha cv. BRS Piatã pastures. The animals were assigned to a completely randomised design with four experimental supplements: U (urea as non-protein nitrogen source), UO (slow-release urea partially replacing urea), UOL (supplement UO + Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast), and UOLP (supplement UOL + multi-strain probiotics). Key results Supplement intake and idleness time were most affected by the season (P < 0.001). The total dry-matter intake was higher in UOLP (P < 0.004), and this supplement also produced the least effects on feeding behaviour. Conclusion The beginning of the rains affected the feeding behaviour. The additive combination in intensive finishing on pasture, such as UOL and UOLP, improved the intake and did not affect the feeding behaviour during the day. Implications These results indicate that the use of additives in intensive finishing on pasture improves productive efficiency and does not change the animal’s behaviour, resulting in an important technology to be disseminated and applied by grazing beef cattle producers.
