In general, enterprises should pay close attention to sustaining sufficient competitiveness in turbulent global business environments that focus on sustainable operations, especially environmental issues. It is obligated for enterprises to protect the environment, utilize sustainable resources and establish eco-industries. Many large enterprises have joined the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). However, the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) pay various degrees of attention to environmental issues and sustainable operations. This paper investigates the sustainable development and innovation of 233 SMEs in Taiwan to find out how to develop a business model that helps them operate in a more sustainable and environmentally friendly way. According to our results, a sustainable business model is a key factor for competitive advantages with straightforward connections to business success. Results also indicate that a sustainable business model is performed with the agreement of colleagues in an organization and it requires comprehensive strategic efforts. This study has limited findings to show the insights of Taiwanese SMEs and should not be generalized in other contexts.

Proposed Green Development Reporting Framework for Enterprises from a Life-Cycle Perspective and a Case Study in China

Green development is becoming prioritized in industrial settings and manufacturing. Under the current trend of green development, the status of the green development of enterprises is not clear. Evaluation indicators of green development are required, especially given that China has issued many green development policies, as well as special funding support. Reporting is an important tool to foster communication among governments, the public, enterprises, and stakeholders, as well as to assess advances in, and provide guidance, toward realizing green development. The purpose of the present study was to establish a green development report framework and green development indicators for enterprises, with an application to a case study of a textile company in China. The green development reporting framework was based on a life-cycle assessment method, which is an index system constructed to combine quantitative and qualitative indicators, process control and outcome-oriented indicators within the scope of both life-cycle and factory boundaries. This index system included definitions and calculations methods of environmental and resource indicators that can comprehensively reflect green development. By using empirical data from 2017 in the case study, the framework and indicators were further described, and the effects of relevant terms were noted. The green development reporting framework and case study herein can help enterprises understand the concept of green development, self-inspection, self-comparison, communicate advancements, and ultimately improve their level of green development.

Tools for Measuring Energy Sustainability: A Comparative Review

This paper is intended to perform a comparative and qualitative review among eight tools to measure energy sustainability. Therefore, it was necessary to create a theoretical and conceptual framework based on four criterias of selection and six categories of comparison. In this work, the conceptual bases that supported the research and the methodology created to carry out the comparative review will be presented. This analysis was based on the intrinsic concepts of energy sustainability of each of the reviewed tools with a critical qualitative analysis. Some conclusions shown through the conceptual framework developed that it was possible to apply an innovative methodology to qualitatively compare different tools to measure sustainability. The importance of this reflects the difficulty of conceptualizing the subjectivity of sustainable development, as shown throughout the paper, where it is often not possible to obtain a measurable result since the measured phenomenon is too complex to reduce it to a numerical value.
