Component Procurement for an Assembly Supply Chain with Random Capacities and Random Demand

Abstract: In a decentralized assembly supply chain, one assembler assembles a set of n components, each produced by a different supplier, into a final product to meet an uncertain market demand. Each supplier faces an uncertain production capacity such that only the lesser of the planned production quantity and the realized capacity can be delivered to the assembler. We assume that the suppliers' random capacities and the random demand follow an arbitrary continuous multivariate distribution. We formulate the problem as… Show more

“…Another similar event was observed when Volkswagen's supplier failed to supply components, causing severe delays in production. Cao and Fang (2019) identified independent intentions among the upstream suppliers and the downstream manufacturer in a decentralised supply chain to be a significant driver to complicate any supply chain. This is further worsened due to the presence of uncertainties in supply and random demand fluctuation from the market.…”

“…The 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan forced numerous Japanese automakers to halt production due to severe supply shortage of spare parts (Fink, 2011). More recently in 2016, several interruptions occurred at Volkswagen factories as its two suppliers suspended contractually agreed deliveries of components after Volkswagen canceled the U.S. $558 million transaction with Car Trim and refused to compensate its investment (Cao & Fang, 2019). In the McKinsey & Co.…”
