Complications of muscle injuries

Abstract: Muscle injuries can be classified into strain injuries and contusions. Depending on the type of injury, different complications may occur, which in turn can be divided into early, intermediate and delayed complications. A prompt diagnosis of complications allows early treatment and permits to avoid harmful sequelae. Imaging studies, ultrasonography in particular, allow (recognizing) the assessment of complications whenever clinically suspected. In this article the most frequent complications of muscle injuries… Show more

“…At present, as the population of sports enthusiasts increases, sports injuries have become a prevalent affliction [4]. Musculoskeletal disorders account for most sports injuries and tend to recur frequently [5,6]. Although rare compared to musculoskeletal diseases, sports medicine encompasses various kinds of diseases that preclude sports activities, including psychological issues [7].…”

“…In recent years, PRP has gained increasing attention in the treatment of diverse musculoskeletal disorders to accelerate tissue healing, including acute or chronic tendon disorders, plantar fasciitis, ligament or muscle injuries, and even the process of osteoarthritis. PRP as an autologous product is acquired from a sample of the athletes’ blood and centrifuged to obtain a large number of platelets in a volume of plasma (Alessandrino and Balconi 2013 ; Andia and Maffulli 2015 ). Platelets are intended to release diverse proteins and cytokines, thereby enhancing the healing and regeneration responses of the injured tissue.…”

“…The off-label use of indomethacin, provided in the context of myositis ossificans (MO), must be kept separate. Myositis ossificans, which is considered to be a heterotopic, non-neoplastic bone or cartilage formation reflecting a complication of structural muscle injuries (Alessandrino and Balconi 2013 ; Delos et al 2013 ), is mostly associated with a history of intramuscular haematoma. Ultrasound has become a reliable tool to expose the presence of MO (Alessandrino and Balconi 2013 ).…”

“…For example, inflammatory diseases, such as diabetes, obesity, and autoimmune conditions, in addition to natural aging, result in the loss of muscle (sarcopenia) and bone (osteopenia) as a result of unresolved daily microinjuries 5,7‐10 . Unresolved injuries or degenerative diseases of the musculoskeletal system cause poor range of motion, chronic pain, and loss of limb function, ultimately resulting in significant disability 11‐13 . In the United States, musculoskeletal disease or injury affects 1 of every 2 people over the age of 18 and accounts for approximately two thirds of the 68,000 disease conditions listed in the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD‐10) 9,14 .…”
