Complications in the Treatment of Hydrocephalus in Children

Abstract: Two homogenous materials of hydrocephalic children operated upon during a 20-year period (1961-1980) are compared. During the first half of the period the ventriculoatrial shunt was the only type used in 103 patients. After that there was a change to the ventriculoperitoneal shunt which was used in 104 patients, whereof 35 were converted from ventriculoatrial to ventriculoperitoneal shunts. Thus the material consists of 172 patients. The complications were less serious and the mortality rate much lower with th… Show more

“…This seems comparable to the 0.35-1.4 range previously described [11][12][13][14][15]. Again, variability likely represents population differences; two previous es timates focus mainly on pediatrics [11,13], Over the 3 years studied, the proportion of revisions involving shunt removal decreased: 23% in 1988; 20% in 1990, and 17% in 1991. Since the proportion of all shunt revisions has remained quite steady (mean 48%, range 43-51%), this decrease in removals may reflect decreasing rates of shunt infection.…”

“…The most common location for distal catheter placement is the abdominal cavity. [2] VPS is thought to be associated with reduced complications compared to ventriculoatrial and ventriculopleural shunts which contributes to its popularity [25]. …”
