Complications Following Percutaneous Mitral Valve Repair

Abstract: Mitral valve disease affects more than 4 million people in the United States and it is the second most prevalent valvulopathy in Europe. The gold standard of treatment in these patients is surgical repair or mitral valve replacement. In the last decade, numerous transcatheter therapies have been developed to overcome the increased number of subjects with symptomatic severe mitral regurgitation and high surgical risk. The Mitraclip (Abbott Vascular, Menlo Park, CA), PASCAL (Edwards Lifesciences, Irvine, CA, USA… Show more

“…Clip-specific complications occurred at much lower rates; these included partial clip detachment (2%) and thrombus formation on the clip (0.1%) ( 4 ). Conduction abnormalities are not a known complication of MC implantation ( 5 ). Eggebrecht et al.…”

“…Acute hemodynamic deterioration during MitraClip repair usually results from complications related to major or life‐threatening bleeding 16,17 . Clinical deterioration due to acute hypoxemia secondary to large right‐to‐left shunting should be addressed by immediate closure of the iASD.…”

“…Acute hemorrhage, cardiac perforation, pericardial tamponade, and transseptal procedure‐related complications are more common and should be quickly ruled out before considering iASDs as the culprit for clinical instability 16 . Once ruled out, the iASD can be evaluated as the cause of hemodynamic instability or acute, persistent hypoxia via transient balloon occlusion of the defect 6,22,23 .…”

“…The complications associated with clip placement include pericardial tamponade, migration and partial clip detachment. 4 The third cardiovascular clip (Ligaclip by Ethicon, Blue Ash, OH, USA) is frequently used in the obliteration of a patent ductus arteriosus in patients who have failed conservative management. The titanium Ligaclip can be deployed by a thoracotomy or a thoracoscopic approach and is more time-efficient compared to traditional surgical ligation.…”
