Complications following laryngeal sacculectomy in brachycephalic dogs

Abstract: RESULTS : In total, 37 dogs were included in the sacculectomy group and 44 in the comparator group. Dogs that had undergone sacculectomy were more likely to develop postoperative complications, with 18 of 37 developing complications, nine of which were moderate to severe. In the group without sacculectomy, nine of 44 dogs developed complications, of which one was severe. Different breed distribution between groups might also impact this outcome.CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE : The results suggest that sacculectomy migh… Show more

“…Severe inflammation can lead to dyspnea and hypoxemia, requiring interventions such as systemic anti-inflammatory medications, sedation, flow-by oxygen supplementation, or temporary tracheostomy tube placement. 6,7 Nebulized epinephrine is hypothesized to cause vasoconstriction of vessels within the mucosa of the upper airways via its action at α-adrenergic receptors, leading to decreased edema and, therefore, decreased upper airway obstruction. 2,8 In human medicine, nebulized epinephrine is used to improve respiratory function in patients experiencing moderate to severe croup, a disease characterized by swelling of the larynx, trachea, and bronchi, which can lead to inspiratory stridor and coughing.…”
