Complexity Reduction of Convolutional and Turbo Decoding Based on Reliability Thresholds

Abstract: In this paper we propose a method that aims at reducing the complexity of convolutional and turbo decoding. Some calculations performed in decoding processing can be eliminated based on reliability thresholds. For convolutional and turbo decoding, the complexity is proportional to the number of branches in the trellis. For convolutional decoding, based on the Viterbi algorithm, we define reliability thresholds for the received samples of the signal and show that is possible to eliminate some branches in the tr… Show more

“…Most stopping criteria have been developed based on the frame level [7], [9], [14], and bit/window level [11], [12], [16]. Soft-decision-based stopping criteria have become a popular choice for output decisions at the frame level [10], [19], [20].…”

“…Some powerful techniques for FEC have been suggested in LTE system such as convolutional codes in [13][14][15], although their techniques improved the system performance but they also faced the problem of high convolutional decoding complexity [16]. In contrast, other studies such as [17][18][19] [20], as well the results of the decoding are not stabile and thus it is necessary to achieve the balance between the decoding performance and complexity [12]. In wireless communication systems, RS codes are widely used due to the high capability of correcting burst errors and random errors.…”
