Complex performance of novel CoNiMnB electrodeposits in alkaline borohydride solutions

Abstract: The complex performance of newly synthesized CoNiMnB electrodeposits in base-stabilized sodium borohydride solutions was examined. The rate of hydrogen generation due to borohydride hydrolysis was determined at different temperatures. Activation energy of approximately 33 kJ/mol was estimated, which is lower than the values reported for other catalysts. At electrochemical conditions, there is a competition between borohydride hydrolysis and electrooxidation reactions. The electrooxidation of borohydride takes … Show more

“…As expected, VS substrate covered with CoMn (red curve) shows the best catalytic activity. The properties of this electrode are better than for CoMn, deposited on Ni foam [5,6], because the authors were not able to cover the foam from inside the pores. So first, the effect of the catalyst layer composition was lowered with at the same time increased substrate influence.…”

“…CoMnB-multilayers on Ni-foam were used as catalyst at the NaBH 4 -hydrolysis [5,6] and their activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is comparable with other Co based substrates or Ni-electrodes [7].…”

“…Such catalysts generally show high reactivity in terms of hydrogen generation rate (HGR) and total conversion (TC) of NaBH 4 . To further gain reactivity, Co z B can be doped by F [26], P [11], Cr [27], Mn [28], Ni [29], Fe [30], Pd [31] or W [32].…”

“…Complete replacement of the precious metal by a non-precious one in the binary catalyst followed by their supporting on a relevant non-precious substrate with pronounced outstanding properties has been tested. Nowadays, non-precious systems, such as Ni-Cr [37], Ni/ ZnNi/Ni/Cu [38] and CoNiMnB [39], are particularly attractive; however, they have not yet been adequately studied and call for further investiga-tions. Alternative techniques of partial or full replacement of a non-precious metal by the precious one have also been used.…”
