Complete Sequence and Annotation of the Mycoplasma phocidae Strain 105 T Genome

Abstract: The genome of Mycoplasma phocidae strain 105T was analyzed in order to improve our understanding of its role in epidemic marine mammal mortalities. It was found to encode a suite of immunosuppressors that may enable evasion of host defenses and modulate susceptibility to viral coinfections or their severity in seals.

“…It is enlarged by 16 IS 3 and IS 1634 family insertion elements, in contrast to the single IS 3 element present in the 8.14-kbp genome of M. phocidae (6). Only about half of the predicted open reading frames (ORFs) have assigned functions, and only one-third could be grouped in subsystems, including structural RNAs; features of DNA, RNA, protein, carbohydrate, fatty acid, or phospholipid metabolism; transport or binding factors; and cell division factors.…”

“…In order to understand better the role of M. phocirhinis in marine mammal mortalities and the implications of such events for human and ocean health, we sequenced and annotated the genome of type strain 852 from pus from a seal lung using the same approach we employed to examine the genome of Mycoplasma phocidae strain 105 T (6). Briefly, the DNA was extracted directly from a lyophilized specimen of M.…”

“…M. phocicerebrale encodes one protein (DMC14_000785) with about 60% amino acid sequence similarity to the three orthologs of mycoplasmal protein M of Mycoplasma phocirhinis and about 40% similarity to the four orthologs of mycoplasmal protein M of Mycoplasma phocidae (11, 12). Protein M binds host IgG to block antigen-specific binding (13).…”
