Complete Genome of Bacillus pumilus Siphophage Blastoid

Abstract: Phage Blastoid is a siphophage that infects Bacillus pumilus. B. pumilus is widely used in agriculture but has recently been linked to cases of food poisoning. Here, we report the complete genome of Blastoid and discuss unique genomic characteristics.

“…are well-documented bacteria, yet only ∼100 Bacillus phage genomes have been sequenced (NCBI Genome database search, 19 January 2018). B. pumilus phages have fewer than 15 sequenced genomes ( 1 6 ). The first B. pumilus phage that was isolated differs from other Bacillus phages in burst size and latent period ( 7 ).…”

“…Since then, several studies have isolated and characterized B. pumilus phages without sequencing ( 8 12 ). Recent studies have reduced the knowledge gap in B. pumilus phage genetics by finding, clustering, and annotating several phages ( 1 6 ).…”

“…Genome announcements have increasingly become opportunities for making publication feasible for these young scientists. [25][26][27][28][29][30] Several of these papers were published as a result of a partnership between the Texas A&M program and members of the SEA-PHAGES community. Graduates of the phage discovery program are "hooked" on scientific research in general and are extremely excited about the potential use of phages in medicine, agriculture and biotechnology.…”
