Complementary opposition as a systems concept

Abstract: The polar opposites and their complementary behaviors are observed in many existing systems, which results in the emergence of the complementary opposition model. The model gives a challenge to the traditional dichotomy model in Western philosophy, and is provided with supportive evidence from both physics and systems research. This paper proposes complementary opposition as an essential concept in general systems theory, and discusses its theoretical and applied aspects in systems perspectives.

“…This relation between bios and tetrads also is a new finding that we are currently exploring. It relates bios to the theory of complementary opposites that plays a central role in systems theory (Bai and Lindberg, 1998;Capra, 1975;Sabelli, 1989Sabelli, , 1998Xu and Li, 1989). The interaction of complementary opposites produces creativity .…”

“…The essence of such a situation is in fact the complementarity and not the opposition. It is for this reason that I believe that it is more correct to talk about the "Synergy of Complements" rather than the "Union of Opposites" (Sabelli, 1989) or even "Complementary Opposition" (Xu, 1989). What needs to be removed from the description is the word "opposite", as it can so easily be misinterpreted and misused.…”

“…Teleonics is a process-based systems approach, developed by Járos and Cloete about the same time, but independently of the other two groups and while being unaware of the work of Heraclitus (Járos, 1987;Sabelli, 1989;Xu, 1989). The approach has been elaborated and applied in different contexts since its inception (Járos, 1993;and Cloete, 1994).…”
