Using new technology in production process is naturally connected with the economic development due to attempt to increase labor productivity and/or decrease in unit production costs. In last decades, term Industry 4.0 is used for such cases, as industrial revolution connected with new technology, especially information and communication technology, used in production process. Industry 4.0 is also connected with a fear of disappearing different kind of occupations replaced by new technology and with the fear of lack of employees in other occupations requiring suitable but not yet existing qualification.In the article we present the development of economic indicators and ratios based on production output, compensation on employees, capital equipment, volume of workers, and hours worked to illustrate development of labor productivity in 1995-2018 in Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Austria, and Germany. We present results about significant changes in economic structure in analyzed countries, but as results of economic development or economic transformation process. Thus, we try to articulate that the development is rather economic evolution than industrial revolution and that there is no reason to be afraid of Industry 4.0 process.

PurposeThis study aims to analyze the socio-ecological policy trade-off caused by technological innovations in the post-COVID-19 era. The study outcomes are utilized to design a comprehensive policy framework for attaining sustainable development goals (SDGs).Design/methodology/approachStudy is done for 100 countries over 1991–2019. Second-generation estimation method is used. Innovation is measured by total factor productivity, environmental quality is measured by carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and social dimension is captured by unemployment.FindingsInnovation–CO2 emissions association is found to be inverted U-shaped and innovation–unemployment association is found to be U-shaped.Research limitations/implicationsThe study outcomes show the conflicting impact of technological innovation leading to policy trade-off. This dual impact of innovation is considered during policy recommendation.Practical implicationsThe policy framework recommended in the study shows a way to address the objectives of SDG 8, 9 and 13 during post-COVID-19 period.Social implicationsPolicy recommendations in the study show a way to internalize the negative social externality exerted by innovation.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the literature by considering the policy trade-off caused by innovation and recommending an SDG-oriented policy framework for the post-COVID-19 era.

Research background: The company intellectual capital is increasingly becoming a global topic. Modern countries building their development on knowledge are aware that intellectual capital, and therefore human capital, can become and becomes global capital not only in international companies. It will be also crucial for the concept Industry 4.0. Purpose of the article: The aim is to find out how the company management approaches the skills and knowledge of its employees thus the intellectual capital, which is becoming a global topic and contributes to the company international business development. Methods: The methodology begins with defining a research problem. Research questions are formulated, a questionnaire is created, the basic sample of respondents is identified and a pilot study and a semi-structured interview verifying some of the questionnaire questions are conducted. Subsequently, a questionnaire survey is realized. The data obtained are filled in the Excel software and the results are presented by figures and verbal description. By answering the research questions, the methodology is fulfilled. Findings & Value added: The research revealed a great discrepancy between the assumed and declared state in the field of work with intellectual capital and employee’s education. It shows the weaknesses being relevant to our country as well as abroad. The results show random employees training, minimal identification of employees´ potential, low importance of services and products quality as well as insufficient interest in turning tacit knowledge into explicit, etc. Research conclusions and recommendations will become very actual even in the period after COVID-19.
