SUMMARY Collaboration skills have become an incontestable necessity for professionals in engineering teams. Engineering teams are becoming more and more interdisciplinary and distributed, products and the environments they are created, used and recycled in are increasingly complex. Design engineers, system architects as well as requirements engineers and managers have to be able to understand the product and its whole lifecycle in order to be able to respect the constraints and requirements that are imposed on the product by different actors. Many of these skills have to be developed and improved in the course of a professional career rather than in initial education. This paper gives insight into the development of one component of a consistent qualification and certification scheme, which is in its entirety particularly targeted at Integrated Design Engineers in various industrial sectors. Concept validation plays a critical role in product design especially in the early design phase of market-driven product design. Due to the presence of ambiguous information, arbitrary interpretation of user needs, and so on, design concept validation remains a challenging task. In this work, we aim to involve customers in the conceptual design phase so that understanding about customer needs, expectations, and satisfaction can be better altered through customer-design interaction. A framework for concept validation using digital prototyping is proposed to actively involve customers in three major validation tasks, i.e., specification solicitation, concept selection, and concept refinement. Technical challenges of involving customers in conceptual design using digital prototyping are discussed. Our experimental study based on smartphone dimension design reveals the capabilities of the proposed framework. Experimental results suggest when interacting through digital prototyping, customer satisfaction on design concepts can be enhanced by making alterations to customer needs, expectations, and satisfaction.

An aircraft is a complex, multi-disciplinary, system-engineered product that requires real-time global technical collaboration through its life-cycle. Engineering data and processes which form the backbone of the aircraft should be under strict Configuration Control (CC). It should be model-based and allow for 3D visualization and manipulation. This requires accurate, realtime collaboration and concurrent engineering-based business processes operating in an Integrated Digital Environment (IDE). The IDE uses lightweight, neutral Computer Aided Design (CAD) Digital Mock-Up (DMU). The DMU deals with complex structural assemblies and systems of more than a hundred thousand parts created by engineers across the globe, each using diverse CAD, Computer Aided Engineering (CAE), Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM), Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Supply Chain Management(SCM),Customer Relationship Management(CRM) and ComputerAided Maintenance Management System (CAMMS) systems. In this paper, a comprehensive approach to making such an environment a reality is presented.
