Compartment model of aerobic and anaerobic biodegradation in a municipal solid waste landfil

Abstract: The mathematical formulations in a one-dimensional compartment model of the biodegradation of organic landfill components are described. The model is designed to switch between anaerobic and aerobic conditions, depending on the local oxygen concentration. The model also includes the effect of environmental factors, such as moisture content, pH, and temperature, on reaction rates. The model includes not only biodegradation processes for carbon compounds (acetate, CO2, CH4), but also for nitrogen compounds invol… Show more

“…It is accepted that the natural chemical stoichiometry varies in the biodegradable fraction as the generated CH4 to CO2 molar ratio uncertainty may vary from 0.50 the default value to 0.55 [9][10][11]17]. The rate equation can be derived from a general carbohydrate formula [C][CH2O]n-1 which is used to represent the simplified structure of one ring of carbohydrate from empirical formulae [30,31] to illustrate the role of moisture in creating sugars as the intermediate precursor for the degradation of organic waste.…”

“…Gas transfer phenomenon in waste cell of Indonesian landfill was not clearly described by the study of landfill gas generation [7] nor by the study of aeration in composting process [8]. Understanding gas transfer phenomenon is important for modeling aerobic and anaerobic biodegradation in a municipal solid waste landfill [9] as well as for analyzing air and landfill gas movement through passive gas vents [10].…”
