Comparisons of Spray Characteristics between Non-circular and Circular Nozzles with Rotating Sprinklers

Abstract: HighlightsExperiments were conducted to investigate the hydraulic performance of the solid-set rotating sprinkler. The effects of nozzle shape and working pressure on the droplet characteristics and kinetic energy of the rotating sprinkler were analyzed. The circular nozzle has a large wetting radius and large droplet size.Use of a non-circular nozzle could result in higher irrigation uniformity and lower kinetic energy imparted to the soil surface by water droplets under low working pressures.Abstract. Reducing… Show more

“…Under the same operating pressure and nozzle size, the circulation flow rates and non-circular injectors were equal, while the circular nozzle's throw radius was greater than that of the non-circular nozzle. In addition, the circular nozzle generates larger droplets than the non-circular nozzle [66].…”

“…In this experiment, the 2DVD was used to measure the droplet size, angle and velocity of droplets near the surface [21]. Ge et al [22] and Chen et al [23] have also explained the use of the 2DVD technology.…”

“…Based on the water application patterns of a single sprinkler, the irrigation uniformity of four adjacent sprinklers with different combined spacing was predicted by simulating the water overlap on the spraying profile. The simulation was based on the cubic-spline interpolation method, which was explained by Chen et al [23]. The Christiansen uniformity coefficient (C U ) was used to evaluate the combined sprinkler irrigation uniformity.…”

“…Liu et al (2019) experimentally investigated the effects of working pressure, nozzle diameter and mounting height on the combined uniformity by using an R33 sprinkler at different wind speeds. Furthermore, Chen et al (2022) compared and evaluated the impact of the nozzle outlet shape on the combined uniformity of the R33 sprinkler. The authors found that non‐circular outlet shapes resulted in higher combined uniformity.…”
