Comparisons in Migration Studies

Abstract: The paper presents and critically discusses the different types of comparison developed in migration studies with a special attention to European literature. It then identifies missing topics and issues to be covered by comparative research in the field by focussing on European and on North American research.

“…Over the last twenty years the number of studies (and comparative studies, in particular) into migratory and post‐migratory phenomena has increased. Many subjects from this area are the focus of large research projects financed by the European Union (hereafter EU) and other international institutions (Martiniello, : 116). Due to an increase in the number of third country nationals (TCNs) in the EU countries, there is an increased focus on integration policies meant to integrate immigrants into the host society .…”

“…National models of immigrant integration are not criticised only by transnational approaches (Faist et al., ); rather, the European integration process itself has initiated deliberation on the convergence of national integration policies with supranational standards of civic integration (Joppke, ). A question posed by Martiniello (: 20) refers to how to reconcile respect for differences with social and economic cohesion, or in other words, what stance to take concerning the increasing diversity of society as a consequence of migration flows. The issue of integration policies is therefore put forward as a great challenge for societies who need to examine their plurality and multiculturalism.…”
