Comparison of video laryngoscopes with direct laryngoscopy for tracheal intubation

Abstract: Video laryngoscopes are a good alternative to direct laryngoscopy during tracheal intubation. The advantage seems to be more prominent when difficult intubation is encountered.

“…[1][2][3] Video laryngoscopy has been demonstrated to improve first-pass and ultimate success and decrease iatrogenic airway trauma during endotracheal intubation in adults. [4][5][6] In addition to clinical benefit, the ability to review videos captured during laryngoscopy provides a unique opportunity to assess metrics related to procedural performance and quality of care. The C-MAC video laryngoscope blades (Karl Storz, Tuttlingen, Germany) are structurally similar to those of conventional laryngoscopes, but allow continuous recording of intubations.…”

“…Difficult intubation and failed tracheal intubation are among the major causes of morbidity and mortality associated with anaesthesia (3,4). Indirect laryngoscopes improve the view and increase the success of intubation in cases when direct glottic view is difficult to obtain (5). In recent years, video laryngoscopy has gained an increasingly important role in the management of difficult and emergent laryngoscopy (6).…”

“…If the direct glottic view cannot be obtained, indirect laryngoscopes are found to be useful to the anesthesiologist to view the cords and increase the success of intubation [11] Various laryngoscopes (as C mac D-blade and Airtraq) were invented recently, which differ in shape and imaging technologies. Fiberoptic bronchoscope is the gold stander to deal with difficult intubation [4].…”
