Abstract. The insecticide Imidacloprid was oxidized in water at 50 mg/L under photocatalytic TiO 2 in presence of formulating agents. Analysis of oxidized solutions was performed with both GC-Ion Trap-MS using either EI and CI as ionization modes and LC-Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionization (APCI)-MS in order to confirm and evaluate the decay of Imidacloprid and the presence of degradation products (DPs). LC-APCI-MS techniques allowed the monitoring of Imidacloprid and 6-chloronicotinic acid along the degradation process. GC-MS techniques allowed the detection of five DPs, three of which were unequivocally identified. Other complementary techniques such as Total Organic Carbon (TOC) and Ion Chromatography (IC) allowed the evaluation of the mineralization degree achieved. A tentative degradation pathway of Imidacloprid under photocatalysis is proposed. After 450 minutes of irradiation, none of the DPs or Imidacloprid were detected. Nearly total mineralization was achieved after 700 minutes of irradiation.

An overview is given on the presence and changes over time of pesticide residues in groundwater from the Valencia region, one of the most important citrus cultivation sites of southern Europe. A multiresidue LC-MS/MS method was applied for the screening of around 50 pesticides in 75 water samples collected during 2000. The herbicides simazine, terbuthylazine, bromacil, terbumeton, and diuron were the most frequently detected compounds. On the basis of compounds detected in these samples, another method that focused on 30 herbicides and relevant transformation products (TPs) was developed and applied to around 80 water samples collected during 2003. Simazine was the most frequently found compound followed by several triazine metabolites. Data for this paper show the vulnerability of groundwater in this area to herbicide applications and illustrate the importance of including pesticide TPs in environmental monitoring programmes, as four out of the five compounds most frequently detected were pesticide TPs.

Efetuou-se avaliação preliminar de pesticidas aplicados em plantações de eucaliptos e coqueiros no Nordeste brasileiro quanto ao risco de contaminação de águas superficiais e subterrâneas. Para tanto, foram utilizados os critérios sugeridos pela Agência de Proteção Ambiental dos Estados Unidos (USA), o índice Growndwater Ubiquity Score (GUS) e o método de Goss. Os pesticidas Tetradifon, Triclorfon, α-Endosulfan, β-Endosulfan, Sulfato de Endosulfan e Glifosato apresentaram potencial de contaminação das águas que exige monitoramento. Segundo os critérios avaliados neste estudo, os demais pesticidas investigados não apresentaram risco de contaminação. PESTICIDES APPLIED IN EUCALYPTUS AND COCONUT PALM PLANTATIONS: PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS Abstract A preliminary evaluation of pesticides applied in eucalyptus and coconut crops in Northeast Brazil was carried out on the contamination risk of ground and superficial waters. For such, it was used the criteria suggested by the United States Environmental Protect Agency (EPA) and the Groundwater Ubiquity Score (GUS), and the Goss method. The pesticides Tetradiphon, Triclorphon, α-Endosulfan, β-Endosulfan, Endosulfan Sulfate and Glyphosate showed considerable potential contamination of waters, which need monitoring. The other pesticides researched didnt show risk of contamination by following the criteria evaluated in this study.
