Comparison of ultrasound guided percutaneous radiofrequency ablation and open thyroidectomy in the treatment of low-risk papillary thyroid microcarcinoma: A propensity score matching study

Abstract: PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy, safety and costs of ultrasound guided percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) versus open thyroidectomy for treating low-risk papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) by using propensity score matching (PSM). PATIENTS AND METHODS: 157 patients who underwent RFA and 206 patients who underwent surgery for low-risk PTMC were included in the study. The patients were followed up at 1, 3, 6, 12 months after treatment, and every half year thereafter. A 1:… Show more

“…Twelve studies were case series (11 retrospective and 1 prospective), which are generally considered to have a high risk of bias and low certainty . Three studies were retrospective cohort studies . All included studies originated from China (n = 11) or Korea (n = 4) and were published after 2016.…”

“…In addition, the rich blood supply to the thyroid gland can lead to transient bleeding at the end of the ablation, although this can be relieved with compression. Finally, a small number of patients experience complications such as altered thyroid function (24,27,49,50,60,77) and cough (21,36,45) after thermal ablation, which normally resolve during the postoperative period.…”

“…RFA can be performed in a clinic, removing the cost of an operating room. From a financial perspective, RFA of indeterminate nodules could potentially be more cost-friendly than thyroidectomy, as is the case for both benign [ 31 ] and low-risk papillary thyroid carcinomas [ 32 ]. Finally, patients undergoing RFA typically only complain of minimally discomforting symptoms, which typically resolve on their own.…”
