Comparison of Two-Step Versus Four-Step Composite Finishing/Polishing Disc Systems: Evaluation of a New Two-Step Composite Polishing Disc System

Abstract: Clinical Relevance The two-step composite disc finishing/polishing system, Enhance Flex NST, can provide a nearly equivalent surface finish as two four-step systems on a variety of composites, in approximately half the time. All systems produce clinically acceptable gloss and surface roughness.

“…Overall, the surface quality of the restorative material influences the clinical performance and durability of restorations 5 , since the maintenance of flat surface decreases early alterations of color and shine, besides of reducing the biofilm growth on surface restoration, which decreases risk of secondary caries lesions and periodontal inflammation [4][5][6][7][8][9] . The roughness present on resin surface can be detected by the tip of the patient's tongue since 0.3µm 10 .…”

“…Rough restoration surfaces can easily accumulate dental plaque and staining substances. Several polishing systems for composite resin restorations are commercially available [3][4][5][6] . Many manufacturers have introduced their own proprietary polishing systems, claiming that these generate a smooth surface with high gloss on composite resins.…”

“…Seus efeitos podem diferir entre as resinas compostas e também pode haver variações entre os sistemas que podem afetar a textura final da superfície. A medição do brilho é um parâmetro adicional de rugosidade para avaliar a eficácia do polimento (Antonson et al, 2011;Dennison, 2011;Goncalves;Ferracane, 2011).…”
