Comparison of two pain scales: Behavioral pain scale and critical-care pain observation tool during invasive and noninvasive procedures in intensive care unit-admitted patients

Abstract: Background: Critically ill patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) frequently experience pain, but the severity of pain in this group of patients is underestimated by the treatment team due to barriers to verbal communication. The aim of the present study was comparing the severity of pain measured by two scales: behavioral pain scale (BPS) and critical-care pain observation tool (CPOT) in ICU-admitted patients during routine daily procedures. “…Gomarverdi et al. ( 2019 ) used a similar approach by using the Spearman correlation during suction. Here, BPS had a median value of 7, while CPOT had a median value of 4, with a strong correlation ( r = .88, p < .001).…”

“… 1 Studies show that 45 to 85% of ICU patients experience pain due to airway suctioning, change of position, and prolonged immobility. 1 , 2 Pain in ICU patient's is a silent fact. The neglect of nurses to examine and manage the pain of these patients is due to sedation, poor physiological condition, and the patient's inability to verbally communicate due to intubation.…”
