Comparison of two assays for measuring plasma concentrations of paracetamol

Abstract: the risk of carcinoma in situ. A recent retrospective report indicates that the risk of carcinoma in situ may be most pronounced in men with seriously affected spermatogenesis and therefore low sperm counts. 18 In another study of infertile men two cases of carcinoma in situ were found in men with sperm counts below 2.5 million/ml and severe testicular atrophy (<10 cm 3 ).

“…A number of assay techniques have been assessed for paracetamol; these techniques have variable costs and different requirements for technical skill and equipment. These include colorimetric techniques, 10 11 8 UV spectrophotometric methods, 12 immunoassays, 13 high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), 14 15 Gas Chromatography (GC), 16 17 and electrophoresis. 18 HPLC is generally accepted as the method of choice.…”

“…Animals developed varying degrees of necrosis, with 6 showing at least moderately severe liver injury and 3 having only mild injury. Of note, the point of care (POC) assay used in this study to maintain the APAP levels has been shown to be unreliable and is no longer commercially available ( Egleston et al, 1997 ). We were unable to find any quantitative POC tests for APAP on the market today.…”

“…The AcetaSite test card with Stat-Site reflectance meter is a bedside method for measuring plasma paracetamol concentrations that takes a few minutes for a result. 6 The recently developed Hewlett-Packard I-Stat system is called by the manufacturers a "point of care blood analysis system." This novel system uses cartridges that are filled with whole fresh blood (two to three drops) and which are then inserted into a hand held analyser which gives results within about two minutes.…”
