Comparison of the zygoma anchorage system with cervical headgear in buccal segment distalization

Abstract: This prospective study aimed to evaluate the effects of the zygoma anchorage system (ZAS) in buccal segment distalization in comparison with cervical headgear (CH). Thirty patients with Class II dental malocclusions were included in the study and were divided into two equal groups: the first group (10 females and 5 males, mean age 14.74 years at T1) received buccal segment distalization with ZAS and the second group (8 females and 7 males, mean age 15.26 years at T1) with CH. The skeletal, dental, and soft tis… Show more

“…By using the ZGA system, the molars are never required for the anchorage during the retraction of the premolars and anterior teeth. In addition, maxillary central incisors were retruded (-1.4±1.2) and overjet was decreased (-0.4±0.3) after distalization, showing that there was no anchorage loss by using the ZGA (10,12,20,21 (22). ZGA sistemi kullanıldığı zaman premolar ve anterior dişlerin retraksiyonu sırasında ankraj için molarlara ihtiyaç duyulmamaktadır.…”

“…Relapse of molar distalization was commonly seen as the molars are usually used as anchorage during distalization and retraction of the premolars and incisors and thus it has been recommended that the maxillary molars should not be used for distalization and retraction of the premolar teeth (22). By using the ZGA system, the molars are never required for the anchorage during the retraction of the premolars and anterior teeth.…”

“…The zygomatic process of the maxilla can be used for this purpose because zygomatic anchors can be positioned at the zygomatic buttress, at a safe distance from the roots of the maxillary molars and allow a full unit buccal segment distalization. 20,21 Sugawara et al 20 and Kaya et al 21 described their distalization systems supported with the zygomatic anchor plates. They reported that the en-masse distalization of maxillary buccal segments was successfully accomplished by their systems.…”

“…19 Recently, zygomatic anchorage systems have been used alternatively for upper molar distalization. 20,21 We designed an intraoral upper molar distalization system supported by the zygomatic region named as the Zygoma-Gear Appliance (ZGA). The aim of this study is to present the use of ZGA for bilateral upper molar distalization in a 16-year-old female with a Class II molar relationship requiring molar distalization.…”
