Metallic coatings based on cobalt and nickel are promising for elongating the life span of machine components operated in harsh environments. However, reports regarding the ambient temperature tribological performance and cavitation erosion resistance of popular MCrAlY (where M = Co, Ni or Co/Ni) and NiCrMoNbTa coatings are scant. This study comparatively investigates the effects of microstructure and hardness of HVOF deposited CoNiCrAlY, NiCoCrAlY and NiCrMoNbTa coatings on tribological and cavitation erosion performance. The cavitation erosion test was conducted using the vibratory method following the ASTM G32 standard. The tribological examination was done using a ball-on-disc tribometer. Analysis of the chemical composition, microstructure, phase composition and hardness reveal the dry sliding wear and cavitation erosion mechanisms. Coatings present increasing resistance to both sliding wear and cavitation erosion in the following order: NiCoCrAlY < CoNiCrAlY < NiCrMoNbTa. The tribological behaviour of coatings relies on abrasive grooving and oxidation of the wear products. In the case of NiCrMoNbTa coatings, abrasion is followed by the severe adhesive smearing of oxidised wear products which end in the lowest coefficient of friction and wear rate. Cavitation erosion is initiated at microstructure discontinuities and ends with severe surface pitting. CoNiCrAlY and NiCoCrAlY coatings present semi brittle behavior, whereas NiCrMoNbTa presents ductile mode and lesser surface pitting, which improves its anti-cavitation performance. The differences in microstructure of investigated coatings affect the wear and cavitation erosion performance more than the hardness itself.

In the present work, the relationship between the cavitation resistance of WC-Co based coatings and the thermal spraying parameters of the HVOF process was studied. The coatings were manufactured using DJH-2600 gun, which works with hydrogen and oxygen as combustion gases. The spraying process was automatized. Three repetitions were obtained for each projection condition to verify the experiments' repeatability. The resistance to cavitation was evaluated by the indirect test of the ASTM G-32 standard. The roughness of the coatings, its surface morphology and microstructure were studied with the aid of contact profilometer, SEM and optical microscopy. The porosity of the coatings was measured by digital image processing and the analysis of the phases present in the coating was carried out by XRD. Subsequently, the data obtained were correlated with the projection parameters to find the best spraying recipe. It was found that the total combustion flux was the parameter that had the strongest effect on every evaluated property, while the combustion ratio (RC) did not have a statistically significant effect on the levels evaluated in the experimental plan. It was possible to improve the cavitation resistance of the WC-Co based coatings using high levels of FTC and a combustion ratio close to the stoichiometric point.

The low-carbon martensitic stainless steel CA6NM is widely used in the impellers of hydroelectric and nuclear power units due to its advantages of high hardness, corrosion fatigue strength, and good fracture toughness. In order to analyze the number of repair welding times on the properties of heat-affected zone (HAZ, the most unstable area of welded joint property) in CA6NM, the microstructure and mechanical properties of HAZ with once-repaired welds (1R) and twice-repaired welds (2R) were tested. Through data analysis, the following conclusions are drawn for welded joints: (1) the grain size of HAZ with a different number of repair welding processes is smaller than that of the base material; (2) the density of texture concentration is reduced and the directionality is not obvious; (3) the density of twins and dislocations are increased; (4) the hardness and impact energy of HAZ of the 1R and 2R specimens are higher than that of the base material.
