Comparison of the Impact of Changes in Waist Circumference and Body Mass Index in Relation to Changes in Serum Gamma-Glutamyltransferase Levels

Abstract: Aim: Serum gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) levels, which are associated with insulin resistance, may predict the incidence of cardiovascular disease and mortality. Here, the relationship was analyzed between changes in obesity parameters and those in serum GGT over a one-year period. Methods: Data were analyzed from individuals who underwent general health screening two years running. Results: Among 3086 individuals (1954 men, 1132 women), percent changes in both waist circumference (%dWC) and body mass index … Show more

“…It is worth noting that the relationships of GGT with lipids were independent of adiposity in both sexes, and the association with insulin resistance persisted after adjusting for FMI in females. Increased levels of GGT have been shown to be strong predictors of adult cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes , and the most powerful indicators of developing metabolic syndrome among liver enzymes . Our study extends these observations to an apparently healthy sample of adolescents.…”

“…In this cohort, the median serum GGT level was higher in patients with increased WC compared with those with normal WC. In patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus with abdominal obesity, this result was interpreted parallel to the literature [37].…”

“…There was also a positive correlation in male diabetics between WC and serum GGT levels at a mild and statistically significant correlation. There are studies in the literature that this correlation exists [37] and does not exist [36]. And there were studies demonstrating no beneficial effect of losing WC on serum GGT [37] [38].…”

“…Combined familial hyperlipidemia frequently accompanies NAFLD in approximately 49-76% of cases 24 , which implies that possible effects of these comorbidities were not completely excluded in our data. Other liver markers such as gamma-GT have also been suggested to be strong predictors of cardiovascular disease and T2DM in adults 25 , and metabolic risks in adolescents 10 ; however, we did not analyze other possible markers in our current study.…”
