Comparison of the effect of aerosolized fibrin sealant and biodegradable synthetic polyurethane foam on hemostasis and wound healing after endoscopic sinus surgery: a prospective randomized study

Abstract: FS and Nasopore were equally successful in achieving hemostasis and patient satisfaction after FESS. However, our results suggest that differential mucosal healing patterns may be induced by alternative absorbable hemostatic materials. FS-treated sides showed more optimal healing patterns than Nasopore-packed sides.

“…The studies by Vaiman et al and Gleich et al presented data as binary outcomes (24,26) ; the studies by Jung et al and Yu et al used an ordinal scale (0 = absent to 3 = severe) to grade the severity of outcomes measured by clinicians, and a VAS (0 = no symptoms to 10 = unbearable) to grade the severity of outcomes measured by participants (12,25) . Since bleeding was assessed by both clinicians and participants in some studies, the method used is indicated in the table (12,25) .…”

“…Diabetes affects a large number of physiological factors involved in the healing process, such as growth factor production, angiogenic response, collagen concentration, tissue granulation and extracellular matrix accumulation and remodeling by matrix metalloproteinases (16). However, fibrin sealants have been used as hemostatic factors and enhancers of the wound healing process in various surgical procedures including gastrointestinal anastomoses, plastic surgery, gynecologic and urologic procedures (17,18).…”
