The Effect of TISSEEL® on Colorectal Anastomosis Healing Process in a Diabetic Animal Experimental Model

Abstract: Background/Aim: Diabetes mellitus is an established risk factor of colorectal anastomosis failure. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of TISSEEL ® in anastomotic healing. Materials and Methods: Forty male, Sprague-Dawley rats were used. Diabetes was induced in half of them by intraperitoneal injection of Streptozotocin, 60 mg/kg. One week after the injection, animals were operated and a 1 cm segment was removed and an end-to-end hand sewn anastomosis was performed. TISSEEL ® was applie… Show more

“…In addition, Ozdenkaya et al [28] investigated the efficacy of fibrin glue on enhancing the staple line after sleeve gastrectomy, which presented an excessive fibrotic reaction without affecting burst pressure. Finally, Stergios et al [29] demonstrated improved tissue remod- eling, reduced inflammation, and increased collagen formation after TISSEEL TM application on colorectal anastomoses in rats suffering from severe hyperglycemia.…”

“…Specimens were evaluated in terms of abundance of endometriotic crypts, collagen content, fibroblast activity, presence of granulocytes, and mononuclear cells and photographed. The assessment of the previously mentioned parameters was based on three novel scoring systems that originated from already described pathological scores as well as from modifications of the Ehrlich-Hunt model [17][18][19][20][21].…”

“…A popular commercially available sealant, TISSEEL® (Baxter Healthcare, Deerfield, IL), was tested against pcECM in this study due to its proven efficacy in stopping venous bleeds. TISSEEL®'s indication is for general hemostasis during surgery, 13,14 and specifically refers to sealing of colonic anastomoses 15,16 . However, its off‐label use is abundant, and it has been adopted for a wide array of applications including dural repair, 17 neurosurgery and peripheral nerve repair, 18–22 congenital heart defects, 23 and periodontal flap surgery 24 .…”
