Comparison of the Cytotoxicities and Wound Healing Effects of Hyaluronan, Carbomer, and Alginate on Skin Cells In Vitro

Abstract: Hyaluronan can repair cell injury and promote cell migration and proliferation. It also has good biocompatibility. As a new type of hydrogel matrix, HA is superior to carbomer and sodium alginate if it is used in wound caring preparations.

“…Good cell compatibility was also evident in the presence of SA H , which produced no changes in HDF cell viability. These results are not in agreement with Guo et al (2015) 12 , where SA 0.1% (SA H ) reduced viability to approximately 70%. Such differences could be due to the cell line used (mouse broblast L929), to differences in viscosity or in monomeric composition (manuronic:guluronic ratio), or to combination of these.…”

“…In the case of SH H , the HDF cell viability was even slightly increased (15%), suggesting excellent biocompatibility properties. In agreement, Guo et al (2015) 12 observed the same tendency in the mouse broblast line L929. The increase in HDF cell viability in the presence of SH may be related to its endogenous nature, since it is the most relevant structural element of the extracellular matrix 13 .…”

“…Alginate hydrogels are applied in wound healing treatments through the construction of wound dressings [12][13][14][15]. Several studies showed that the bioavailability of drugs encapsulated in alginate hydrogels is greater than that of the free drug applied directly at the lesion site, thus increasing the efficacy of healing.…”

“…Considering other ingredients, let's look at the example of one topical skin care product, AnteAge Serum, promoted by an anesthesiologist and currently on the market and positioned for sale to estheticians, physicians, and other health care providers: Second, although cetyl ethylhexanoate is considered to be safe for use in skin care products when diluted, the chemical itself causes irritation of the skin (Fiume et al, 2015) and therefore as a stay-on, constantly used skin care chemical, may induce inflammation. Third, carbomer has been shown to be cytotoxic when applied to the skin (Guo et al, 2015). Fourth, in one study of polyisobutene, in vitro application was shown to promote a cancer-like cellular transformation (Cosmetic review panel, 2008).…”
