Comparison of the biliproteins from two strains of the thermophilic cyanophyte Synechococcus lividus

Abstract: C-Phycocyanins from two thermophilic strains of Synechococcus lividus that grow within different temperature ranges have been shown to be unalike. The aggregation ability of these two C-phycocyanins in sedimentation-velocity experiments varied dramatically. Surprisingly, the aggregation properties of mesophilic C-phycocyanins were found to lie between those of the two thermophilic proteins. Under identical conditions at pH7.0, one thermophilic protein (Sy I) was composed of 17S and larger aggregates, whereas t… Show more

“…C-phycocyanin from S. lividus that grows at the highest temperature and at pH 6.0 is entirely composed of twodisk aggregates (MacColl et al 1974). This suggested that the C-phycocyanin rods, which are C-phycocyanin-linker complexes, from the thermophilic alga are much more stable to dissociation than mesophilic C-phycocyanin rods.…”

“…Aggregates larger than lIS hexamer were first irreversibly disaggregated to I IS and 6S at alkaline pH (19,20 (1,20) also show a predominance of llS species near the isoelectric point and an increase of 6S species at higher pH. The reversible equilibrium of 6S and 11S species from both mesophilic and thermophilic algal sources has also been noted (1,2,15,19).…”
