Comparison of the beneficial effects of guar gum on lipid profile in hyperlipidemic and normal rats

Abstract: In this study, we searched the hypolipidemic effects of a dietary fiber in hyperlipidemic and normal rats. Rats were fed with high-fat diet (HFD) or a normal fed diet (NFD) for 12-weeks and then treated with 5, 10 and 20% guar gum in their regime for 28 days. Total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG) and lowdensity lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were significantly increased in HFD rats, while administration of guar gum significantly lowered them. Serum high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) was reduced … Show more

“…The lipid lowering effect of free berberine is also substantiated with an earlier study [46]. The lipid lowering effect of guar gum and gum acacia has also been described in a previous study [47,48]. Hence, Ber/Gu-AGNCs showed a better anti-hyperlipidemic effect than free berberine and Gu-AGNCs.…”

“…These results agree with that obtained by Daumerie and henquin, (2011) who reported that significant decreases in human serum cholesterol levels following GG ingestion. These decreases are through to be a function of its high soluble fiber content. GG may be effective hypolipiedemic agent and may prevent hyperlipidemic on the arthrosclerosis in both hyperlipidemic and normal rats (Hajzadeh et al, 2012). GG fiber helps in decreasing the levels of cholesterol in experimental animals (www.webMd, 2017).…”

“…Numerous clinical trials have examined the effects of guar gum supplementation on various diseases, such as diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome and dyslipidaemia (16)(17)(18)(19) . Animal studies suggest that guar gum supplementation has hypolipidaemic effects (20)(21)(22) . While numerous human studies have been performed to investigate the effects of guar gum supplementation on lipid profile, results have been contradictory.…”
