Background: Premature rupture of membranes is one of the known causes of preterm labor and accounts for approximately one-third of cases. Vitamin D deficiency may play a role in preterm labor, as well.Objective: The present study aimed to compare vitamin D levels in mothers and infants with and without prolonged rupture of membranes (PROM).Materials Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on 241 babies with and without a history of rupture of membranes in mothers, in the neonatal ward of Ghaem Hospital, Mashhad from 2019 to 2021 with available sampling method. After the confirmation of prolonged rupture of membranes (more than 18 hours before birth) based on history and examination with a speculum, we completed data collection tool, a checklist including laboratory evaluation and neonatal and maternal characteristics. The condition of the neonates with and without prolonged rupture of membranes was compared. Data were analyzed by T-test and Chi-square.Results: We examined a total of 241 neonates including 148 (61.4%) without prolonged rupture of the membranes in mothers and 93 (38.6%) with PROM. There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups, maternal vitamin D level (P = 0.001), neonatal vitamin D level (P = 0.001), and fifth minute Apgar score (P = 0.003). This means that the values of these variables were lower in the group of neonates with PROM.Conclusion: Vitamin D deficiency in mothers has been significantly associated with prolonged rupture of membranes and with increasing severity of vitamin deficiency, the probability of PROM increases and therefore rises the likelihood of preterm labor and its complications.

Background: Transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN) is one of the most frequent causes of respiratory distress in neonates. A relationship has been shown between vitamin D deficiency and respiratory disorders in neonates. This research was carried out to evaluate the serum level of vitamin D in TTN newborns and their mothers compared to the control group. Methods: This case-control research was conducted during 2016-2019 in a general hospital affiliated with Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Iran. Thirty-four infants with TTN and 82 neonates in the control group as well as their mothers were investigated. The levels of umbilical cord serum vitamin D in infants with TTN and also their mothers were compared to the control group. Results: The mean levels of serum vitamin D in infants with TTN and their mothers were 8.11 ± 4.32 and 12.6 ± 10.12 ng/mL, respectively (P<0.001), whereas they were 19.21 ± 12.71 and 25.96 ± 16.6 ng/mL in the newborns of the control group and their mothers, respectively (P<0.001). The mean differences (95% CI) of neonatal and maternal vitamin D level between the two groups were 11.10 (7.92–14.28) and 13.36 (7.90–18.08), respectively. In the TTN group, 100% of the infants had vitamin D levels less than 30 ng/mL (79.4% had severe, 17.6% had moderate and 2.9% showed mild deficiency). However, vitamin D levels lower than 30 ng/mL were observed in 76.4% of the neonates in the control group (28.8% had severe, 31.1% showed moderate and 16.3% had a mild deficiency) (P<0.001). Conclusion: The serum vitamin D levels of infants with TTN and their mothers were significantly lower than the control group. Therefore, TTN in infants may be reduced through the treatment of vitamin D deficiency in mothers.

Background: The possibility of vitamin D deficiency is high among mothers and their premature newborns. Objectives: Due to the high rate of vitamin D deficiency in Iranian women, this study aimed to determine the association between the serum levels of vitamin D in the blood of premature newborns and their mothers in the Iranian population. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 324 mothers and their 324 newborns with gestational age less than 37 weeks, who were referred to Ghaem Hospital affiliated to Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Mashhad, Iran, during 2016-2020. After clamping, 1.5 cc blood samples were obtained through the umbilical cord to determine the neonates’ vitamin D levels. Finally, the serum levels of vitamin D were measured, and the correlation between the levels of vitamin D of mothers and their newborns was calculated. Results: The mean vitamin D levels of newborns and mothers were 15.75 ± 11.18 and 20.16 ± 13.41 ng/mL, respectively. Moreover, there was a high correlation between the vitamin D levels of mothers and their newborns (r = 0.672; P < 0.001). Furthermore, a significant correlation was observed between the vitamin D levels of mothers, who used vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy and their neonates’ levels (r = 0.773; P < 0.001). Conclusions: The findings suggest a positive correlation between neonatal and maternal vitamin D levels. Moreover, it seems that maternal vitamin D levels can predict neonatal vitamin D deficiency.
