Comparison of Ring Pulse Oximetry Using Reflective Photoplethysmography and PSG in the Detection of OSA in Chinese Adults: A Pilot Study

Abstract: Objective A novel ring-worn oximeter (Circul) uses reflective photoplethysmography and automated signal processing to calculate oxygen desaturations. We evaluated the ability of Circul to detect obstructive sleep apnea in Chinese adults. Methods We recruited 207 Chinese Han subjects: 70% males, mean age 48.2±14.7 years, mean BMI 27.6±4.8 kg/m2 and mean AHI 28.6±25.2 events/h. All participants underwent simultaneous polysomnography (PSG) and Circul testing in a sleep lab… Show more

“…This is also reported by studies on type 3 PM in OSA with and without comorbidities ( 13 , 14 , 18 ). In studies on type 4 PM, though different oximetry devices were performed variously, the newly developed technology with accelerometer and PPG analysis may decrease the disparity between TRT and TST ( 19 , 20 ). However, they were only validated in OSA patients without comorbidities.…”

“…Due to inconvenient movement and limited financial capacity, type 3 PM is a more accessible way to diagnose OSA for polio survivors. Type 4 PM has the advantage of easy set-up and a high success rate, also leading it to be an alternative way to screen OSA for polio survivors ( 19 , 22 ). The results of our current study also provide supportive evidence for the use of type 3 and type 4 PMs.…”

“…PSG tracings were scored manually according to AASM guidelines (Berry et al, 2012). For each participant receiving another three sleep‐monitoring sessions during the study, a wireless, non‐contact, ultra‐wide band (UWB) radar sleep apnea monitor was used to screen for OSA (Li et al, 2023; Zhao et al, 2021; Zhao et al, 2022). The monitor is described in detail in our previous study (Wu et al, 2022).…”

“…While devices based on direct airflow analyses are not often seen, oximetry‐based analyses became more common with the advent of fitness trackers, smartwatches, and rings. The oximeters embedded into wearable devices seem to be accurate in detecting hypoxia in multiple conditions, including during daily life activities, during sleep, and in experimentally induced hypoxia (Jung et al, 2022; Marinari et al, 2022; Santos et al, 2022; Zhao et al, 2022).…”

“…Such innovation seems to arise from a concomitant concern related to inventiveness, patentability, and diagnostic accuracy. Regarding the position of these devices, fingertip oximeters and rings are among the most common (Gu et al, 2020; Zhao et al, 2022), but they also include devices based on neck collars, mandibular movement monitors (Pepin et al, 2022; Pépin et al, 2020), and surface acoustic wave sensors (Jin et al, 2017).…”
