“…Although the physiological relevance of such a store remains obscure, it has been implicated in vascular tone regulation in spontaneously hypertensive rats (Kubaszewski et al 1994). A similar intrinsic photo-relaxant response has also been reported in the gastric fundus of the dog (Ozaki et al 1992) and the mouse ( O g ulener et al 1996), but not in the rat (Chang et al 1998), although its physiological implications have not been studied further. Except for these few reports, non-vascular smooth muscle from gastrointestinal (Ehrreich & Furchgott, 1968;Trivedi et al 1978), respiratory (Chang et al 1993) and genital tracts (Ehrreich & Furchgott, 1968) and urinary bladder (Ehrreich & Furchgott, 1968;Chung et al 1996) in different animal species has been shown to be insensitive to light irradiation, although it can develop a significant relaxation in the presence of compounds with a nitromoiety, through their photo-cleavage and NO generation.…”

“…A cyclic GMP-dependent mechanism appears to be involved in the nitrergic relaxation of the rat and mouse gastric fundus (Williams and Parsons, 1995;Chang et al, 1998;Bayguinov et al, 1999;Selemidis and Cocks, 2000). Cyclic GMP-dependent protein kinase I apparently plays a key role in the NO/cyclic GMP signaling pathway in the mouse gastric fundus (Ny et al, 2000).…”

“…The slopes in (a) for all the tumors were classified into two groups: without pretreatment and with pretreatment. A t-test between these two groups of slopes gives rise to P 5 0.95. upregulation of nitric oxide, and thus, produce vasodilation (41)(42)(43). The increase of tumor blood contents due to laser irradiation observed in our study may be attributed to the vessel dilation induced by the direct effect of heating as well as photoactivation.…”
