The present study aimed to investigate the age-related changes in gait speeds and asymmetry during circular and straight-line gaits among older adults aged 60-79 years. Methods:The study included 391 community-dwelling older adults aged >60 years, who participated in the Nagahama cohort study. They were assigned to four age groups: 60-64 years (early 60s), 65-69 years (late 60s), 70-74 years (early 70s) and 75-79 years (late 70s). For the circular gait test, the time required to walk twice around a 1-m diameter circle for right and left rotations were measured. The average time of the two trials was measured as the circular gait time, and the side-to-side difference in the circular gait times was calculated as an asymmetry index. Walking speed, asymmetry of step length, and asymmetry of stance duration time during straightline gait at comfortable and maximal walking pace were measured.Results: Circular gait time in older women in the late 70s group was significantly slower than that in other age groups; however, no age-related change was observed in older men. Maximal gait speeds in the early and late 70s groups were significantly slower than those in the early 60s group.Conclusions: Age-related decline in circular gait speed was observed in older women aged ≥75 years, but not in older men. Maximal straight-line gait speed decreased significantly in both genders after the age of 70 years.

Gait is one of the examined functions in child development. It should be economical and symmetrical. One test increasingly used by physiotherapists and pediatricians is asymmetrical tonic neck reflex (ATNR). Physiologically, it is observed from in utero up to six postnatal months. This reaction is inhibited with the growing maturation of the central nervous system (CNS). In some children, when the natural process of development is incorrect, ATNR manifests later in life, when it is observed as an automatic response of muscle tension to head rotation. Analysis of pelvis symmetry in the gait of children with active ATNR is important for better understanding their specific movements. In the gait of children with persistent ATNR, some variations are observed. The aim of the study was to investigate the gait symmetry of preschool children and the influence of persistent ATNR. Fifty preschool children with a trace form of ATNR were examined. The distribution of the gait parameters was determined using a BTS G-SENSOR measurement instrument. ATNR negatively influences pelvic obliquity and pelvic rotation (p < 0.01). Younger children have a statistically higher symmetry index of pelvis obliquity in the examined group (p = 0.015). Boys obtain a higher result of symmetry in pelvic tilt than girls in the group (p = 0.027). ATNR affects walking symmetry in preschool children, thus evaluation of the reflex activity and then proper therapy is required to support proper development.

This study describe the characteristics of hemiplegic stroke gait with principal component analysis (PCA) of trunk movement (TM) and gait event (GE) parameters by the inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors: (1) Background: This process can determine dominant variables through multivariate examination to identify the affected, unaffected, and healthy lower-limb sides; (2) Methods: The study monitored forty patients with stroke and twenty-eight healthy individuals comprising the control group for comparison. The IMU sensors were attached to each subject while performing a 6 m walking test. Sixteen variables extracted from the measured data were divided into 7 GE and 9 TM variables explaining pelvis tilt, oblique, and rotation. (3) Results: The tilt range variables of the trunk movement on the affected and unaffected sides were lower than those of the healthy side; this showed between-group differences in various GE variables. For the healthy and affected sides, 80% of variances were explained with 2 or 3 PCs involving only a few dominant variables; and (4) Conclusions: The difference between each side leg should be considered during the development of a diagnosis method. This research can be utilized to develop functional assessment tools for personalized treatment and to design appropriate training protocols.

Abstract: If the use of gait analysis systems (GAITRite, G-walk, and Treadmill) confirms differences in gait recovery pattern among stroke patients according to the paralyzed side, the findings will provide essential evidence for differential treatment of stroke patients on that basis.
