Comparison of potential long-term costs for preventive dentistry treatment of post-orthodontic labial versus lingual enamel cavitations and esthetically relevant white-spot lesions: a simulation study with different scenarios

Abstract: Background Post-orthodontic white-spot lesions (WSL) in esthetically relevant incisor and canine areas impair dentofacial esthetics, and preventive dentistry treatment is definitely required in case of enamel cavitations. The incidence of lingual post-orthodontic WSL and cavitation following lingual MB treatment has been reported to be distinctively decreased compared to labial MB treatment. Moreover, lingual WSL do not impair dentofacial esthetics. It was the objective of this study to calculate … Show more

“…The distalization of the entire maxillary dentition can also be performed using lingual appliances combined with skeletal anchorage, as has been described in a small number of case reports [ 7 , 10 – 12 ]. In addition to aesthetic advantages, lingual treatment in adolescents offers the advantage of a reduced risk of enamel decalcification [ 13 ]. Also, because of the biomechanical characteristics of lingual orthodontics, torque control during upper anterior retraction is of particular importance in this situation [ 14 , 15 ].…”

“…White spot lesions' occurrence has been reported to vary from 2% to 97%, while in patients without orthodontic treatment it is between 11% and 24% [4,5]. They are caused by enamel demineralization due to bacterial plaque deposits and carbohydrate metabolism with acidic release.…”

“…The appliances are described in various types depending on the position in which they are applied for their function [2,4]. Many differential forces are exerted on the periodontal tissues by all forms of orthodontic appliances [2,5,6]. Such mechanical stresses applied on the periodontium allow a wide range of growth factors, cytokines and chemokines to be secreted by the tissue [7,8].…”
