Abstract: The results tend to indicate that saliva may be a reliable alternative to plasma for monitoring levetiracetam concentrations. Levetiracetam can also be detected in human hair.

“…Many studies have confirmed that hair pigmentation has a relatively high binding capacity for basic drugs but not for acidic and neutral drugs. We showed that the hair colour or the dyeing of hair did not influence the levetiracetam concentration in the hair of patients 11 . Moreover, the main factors influencing drug incorporation in hair are the melanin affinity, lipophilicity and basicity (pK) of the drugs 38 …”

“…28,29 Our previous studies showed that there is a high correlation of saliva/plasma and, therefore, saliva can be applied as a matrix for levetiracetam and lamotrigine monitoring in patients with epilepsy. 11,12 However, no relationship was found for the dose/mg and concentration in hair relationship for these drugs. In the present study, we wanted to check the correlation between the concentration of the drug in the hair and the drug administration scheme in controlled conditions and to highlight the importance of hair as a matrix.…”
