Comparison of phosphorus reduction alternatives in control of nutrient concentrations in Lake Uluabat (Bursa, Turkey): Partial versus full sediment dredging

Abstract: a b s t r a c tIn this study, Water Quality Analysis Simulation Program (WASP) was used to simulate the impacts of various phosphorus (P) load reduction scenarios on nutrient concentrations in Lake Uluabat, a Ramsar site (a wetland of international importance designated under the Ramsar Convention), including sediment dredging options and source reduction. The model was calibrated for various water constituents including ortho-phosphate (PO 4 3− ) and nitrate (NO 3 − ). The calibrated model was used as a manag… Show more

“…Those models can be used to simulate different water quality problems. For example, while the Qual2E model (Palmieri & De Carvalho, 2006;Chapra, 2008) and its updated version Qual2K model (Von Sperling, 2007;Chapra et al, 2008;De Paula, 2011) are used to model water quality in river and stream, WASP model (Lai et al, 2012;Zhang & Rao, 2012;Yenilmez & Aksoy, 2013) has been used to examine eutrophication in lakes or streams and heavy metal pollution in rivers. AQUATOX model (Mamaqani et al, 2011;McKnight et al, 2012) is a valuable tool in ecological risk assessment for aquatic ecosystems.…”

“…Multiple uses of surface water and uncontrolled discharge of sanitary wastes cause negative impacts on the quantity and quality of water in urbanized regions (Zhang et al, 2011;McKnight et al, 2012;Sulis & Sechi, 2013;Yenilmez & Aksoy, 2013;Salla et al, 2013a). Among the anthropic actions that affect water bodies, release of inorganic and carbonaceous and nitrogenous organic compounds particularly degrades water quality, since the water has limited capacity for biochemical degradation of supernatant organic matter, so that the dissolved oxygen, among its various functions, is a determining factor for the survival of living organisms in the water.…”

“…The QUAL2E models (Chapra et al, 2008;Palmieri & Carvalho, 2006) and their updated versions QUAL2K and QUAL2kw (Chapra et al, 2008;Von Sperling, 2007;De Paula, 2011) are well accepted for river and stream water quality modeling. The WASP (Lai et al, 2012;Yenilmez & Aksoy, 2013;Zhang & Rao, 2012) and WEAP models (Mehta et al, 2013;Weaver et al, 2013) are widely used in water resources planning to assess lake eutrophication and climate change, respectively. On the other hand, the AQUATOX model (Mamaqani et al, 2011;Mcknight et al, 2012) is a powerful tool for assessing ecological risks in aquatic ecosystems.…”
