Comparison of PEDOT Films Obtained via Three Different Routes through Spectroelectrochemistry and the Differential Cyclic Voltabsorptometry Method (DCVA)

Abstract: The performance of different poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) films was compared by electrochemical, spectroelectrochemical, and time-derivative measurements of absorbance versus potential (linear potential-scan voltabsorptometry) for an overall spectroelectrochemical characterization of the electrochromic properties in ionic liquids such as 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (BMITFSI). The time-derivative signals were monitored at different wavelengths, and information obtai… Show more

“…Conjugated polymers are one of the main classes of materials that exhibit EC properties as thin films. [3,6,11,[18][19][20][21][22][23] A drawback of most ECPs is the lack of a highly transmissive and fully colorless bleached state. ECPs, therefore, are a large-scale and low-cost solution for ECDs since they can be coated on flexible plastic substrates by means of wet chemical approaches.…”

“…The spectral absorbance of the polymer drastically changes depending on the level of PEDOT doping, as illustrated for PEDOT-Ag in Figure 6 (identical results were obtained for PEDOT-Au and PEDOT:PSS interfaces, bare and metallic ones, not shown). [17] We were not able to observe the plasmonic bands of the metallic NPs, probably because of their small amounts. [16,17,26,88,89] As expected, the resulting coloration efficiencies do not depend on the film thickness, whereas the contrast ratio, which is highly sensitive to the absorbance in either state, reaches a very high level for the thickest sample (cf. “…The spectroelectrochemically measured optical band gap (extracted from the onset of p-p* transition) of (R)-PEDOT-PP and (S)-PEDTM-PP were about 1.68 eV (about 740 nm) and 1.66 eV (about 747 nm), which is comparable to the reported optical band gap of parent PEDOT (1.6 eV). 75 This indicates that the pendant benzene group has slightly influence on the electronic properties of PEDOT.…”
