Comparison of Natural Drainage Group and Negative Drainage Groups after Total Thyroidectomy: Prospective Randomized Controlled Study

Abstract: PurposeThe aim of this study was to compare a negative pressure drain with a natural drain in order to determine whether a negative pressure drainage tube causes an increase in the drainage volume.Materials and MethodsSixty-two patients who underwent total thyroidectomy for papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) were enrolled in the study between March 2010 and August 2010 at Gyeongsang National University Hospital. “… 12 A technique of temporary natural drainage has been used and could reduce blood loss after total thyroidectomy compared with continuous negative drainage. 20 Our results support the application of temporary natural drainage to reduce blood loss after TKA. Moreover, the TBL in this study was obviously less than other previous studies.…”

“…A number of trials have compared different drainage types, with variable results. Drainage types and some other aspects, such as the use of haemostatic materials, cosmetic outcomes with the use of drains, and postoperative nausea and vomiting in relation to drain use, were not considered in the present meta‐analysis.…”

“…Patients whose level of risk for the development of hypocalcemic symptoms is low could be discharged early, thereby reducing the inconvenience of hospitalization and its associated costs 5,9,15-17. If it is thought that the development of hypocalcemia symptoms is a possibility in patients who are discharged early, these symptoms might easily be resolved by prescribing emergency calcium agents at the time of discharge, thoroughly explaining the symptoms associated with hypocalcemia, and advising patients to take prescribed calcium agents and return to the hospital when unexpected symptoms occur.…”
