Comparison of minimum quantity lubrication and wet milling based on energy consumption modeling

Abstract: Estimating the energy consumed by machining process is substantial because it has a large share of environmental effects in the manufacturing industry. In this paper, a generic energy consumption model was developed for milling processes that is able to be applied in all milling machine tools. Energy consumption of each segment was estimated according to power characteristics and parameters extracted from numerical control (NC) codes, then the total energy consumption was estimated by adding energy consumption… Show more

“…Further, sustainability assessment has also been analyzed through decision-making Pugh matrix approach (PMA), energy consumption and CO 2 emission considering technological, economical and ecological aspects. [51][52][53][54][55] Some weightages are assigned to each sustainability assessment parameters for different cooling environments from −2 to 2 as per superior or inferior results (presented in Supplementary Table 10). Similarly, for worse and better results, this may be assigned as −1 to + 1 score.…”

“…Today, the production of industrial parts must be in a way that has the lowest cost and energy consumption in production to be economical. 25 In this article, an aviation thin-walled workpiece was selected and the distortion, cutting force, surface texture, and roughness (R a ) of 7075-T6 aluminum alloy were investigated. So, there is a need for focused study on direct effects on machining induced distortion which are controllable by an operator.…”

“…2 Among available cooling and lubrication methods, minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) is one of the sustainable methods for ameliorating machining efficiency and reducing production costs and environmental impact. [3][4][5] A commercial MQL system typically consists of five main components, including an air compressor, a cooling fluid tank, tubes, a flow control system, and spray nozzles. MQL uses an atomizing and spraying technique to spray a small quantity of oil and pressurized gas mixture directly into the cutting area.…”
