In this research, mice were gavaged with different doses of lemon seed flavonoids (LSF) for 4 weeks, and vitamin C was used as a positive control to investigate its effects on anti-fatigue and antioxidant capacity in exhaustively exercised mice. The results obtained from the study indicated that both vitamin C and LSF could significantly increase the running exhaustion time of mice, and the exhaustion time of mice was prolonged with increasing LSF concentration. LSF can increase hepatic glycogen and the free fatty acid content and reduce the lactate and urea nitrogen contents in a dose-dependent manner in mice. Serum CK, AST, and ALT levels in mice decreased gradually with increasing LSF concentration. LSF increased SOD and CAT levels and decreased MDA levels in mice in a dose-dependent manner. LSF could also enhance nNOS, eNOS, and ASCT1 mRNA expression and decrease syncytin-1, iNOS and TNFα expression in the skeletal muscle of mice. By HPLC analysis, LSF was found to contain epigallocatechin, caffeic acid, epicatechin, vitexin, quercetin, and hesperidin, which are common flavonoids of this species. Thus, it was observed that LSF has good anti-fatigue and antioxidant capacities, and its anti-fatigue effect is related to improving the hepatic glycogen reserve capacity, increasing fat mobilization, and reducing lactate accumulation and protein decomposition. The antioxidant capacity of LSF is related to scavenging free radicals and reducing lipid peroxidation, and its antioxidant effect comes from its five antioxidant flavonoids. In conclusion, LSF has high development and application prospects in nutritional supplements. Practical applicationsLemon seed is the waste of lemon processing, which contains abundant flavonoids.The flavonoids in lemon seed can be used to exert its antioxidant effect and recover from exhausted exercise. Therefore, it can be concluded that lemon seed flavonoids are functional components that can be used as exercise recovery substances.

Effect of lemon peel flavonoids on anti-fatigue and anti-oxidation capacities of exhaustive exercise mice

In this study, lemon peel flavonoids (LPF) were administered to investigate its effect on the anti-fatigue and antioxidant capacity of mice that undergo exercise until exhaustion. LPF (88.36 min in LPFH group mice) significantly increased the exhaustion swimming time compare to the untreated mice (40.36 min), increased the liver glycogen and free fatty acid content in mice and reduce lactic acid and BUN content in a dose-dependent manner. As the concentration of lemon peel flavonoids increased, the serum creatine kinase, aspartate aminotransferase, and alanine aminotransferase levels of mice gradually decreased. LPF increases superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) levels in mice and reduces malondialdehyde levels in a dose-dependent manner. And LPF raises hepatic tissue SOD, CAT activities and reduces skeletal muscle tissue iNOS, TNF-α levels of mice compared to the control group. LPF also enhanced the expression of copper/zinc-superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn-SOD), manganese-superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD), and CAT mRNA in mouse liver tissue. LPF also enhanced the expression of alanine/serine/cysteine/threonine transporter 1 (ASCT1) mRNA and attenuate the expression of syncytin-1, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in mouse skeletal muscle. According to high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis, it was found that LPF contains flavonoids such as rutin, astragalin, isomangiferin, naringin, and quercetin. Our experimental data show that LPF has good anti-fatigue effects and anti-oxidation ability. In summary, LPF has high prospects to be developed and added to nutritional supplements.

Gaharu leaves (Aquilaria microcarpa Baill.) empirically used to lower blood glucose levels by people of Tamiang Layang Cental Kalimantan. This study measured the activity of A. microcarpa leaves to blood glucose and glycogen liver levels. The study used 24 male white rats. Animal test were divided into 6 groups (n=4) receiving different treatments: normal control, negative control (vehicle), positive control (glibenclamide 0,45 mg/kg BW), n-butanol fraction (12.5 mg/kg BW; 25 mg/kg BW; and 50 mg/kg BW). All groups, excluding the normal group, were induced by alloxan monohydrate (150 mg/kg BW, i.p.). After 72 hours, the levels of glucose blood were measured and the treatment was administered. Pre-prandial and postprandial measurement of blood glucose levels were conducted on days 0, 7, and 14 after treatment. On day 15th the liver was extracted out and analyzed by UV-Vis spectrophotometry to determine the glycogen levels. The results of this study showed that bood glucose levels reduction and liver glycogen levels enhancement of n-butanol fraction of A. microcarpa leaves at the doses of 12.5; 25 and 50 mg/kg BW significantly different with the negative control (p < 0.05). This result suggests n-butanol fraction of A. microcarpa leaves has potensial as an antidiabetic agent.
