Comparison of hybrid FDG PET/MRI compared with PET/CT in colorectal cancer staging and restaging: a pilot study

Abstract: Our initial experience shows a high diagnostic accuracy of PET/MRI in T staging of rectal cancer compared with PET/CT. In addition, PET/MRI shows at least comparable accuracy in N and M staging as well as restaging to PET/CT. However, the small sample size limits the generalizability of the results. It is expected that PET/MRI would yield higher diagnostic accuracy than PET/CT considering the high soft tissue contrast provided by MRI compared with CT, but larger studies are necessary to fully assess the benefi… Show more

“…Additionally, we confirmed the propensity for slightly higher SUVs on PET/MRI than on PET/CT (15,16,22,23). The underlying reasons are not yet completely understood, but it is assumed that in addition to differences in scanner technology, biologic factors may play a role.…”

“…Accurate identification of disease involvement in mesorectal fat and/or fascia allow an accurate plan for patient management. PET/MRI also provided comparable diagnostic accuracy for N and M staging with PET/CT (true positive findings in 86 % vs. 71 %, respectively) [47]. In initial diagnosis and clinical follow-up, metastasis of colorectal cancer occurs in lymph nodes, peritoneum, and distant organ.…”

“…Abdominal ve pelvik tümörlerde, yumuşak doku sarkomlarında yüksek yumuşak doku kontrastı nedeniyle MR görüntülemenin BT'ye olan üstünlüğü, bu bölgelerde primer ve metastatik tümörlerin değerlendirilmesinde PET/MR'yi PET/BT'ye göre üstün kılmaktadır (4,5,6). Kolorektal tümörlerin lokal yayılımının değerlendirilmesi, karaciğerde metastatik lezyonların sayı ve boyutlarının daha doğru biçimde saptanabilmesi, tüm vücut PET görüntüleme ile aynı seansta alınabilecek bölgesel yüksek çözünürlüklü PET/MR görüntüleri ile mümkündür.…”
