Comparison of H2-Receptor Antagonist-and Proton-Pump Inhibitor-Based Triple Regimens for the Eradication of Helicobacter Pylori in Chinese Patients with Gastritis or Peptic Ulcer

Abstract: This study compared the efficacy of an H 2 -receptor antagonist (H 2 RA)-and a proton-pump inhibitor (PPI)-based triple regimen for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection. Chinese patients with H. pylori-associated gastritis or peptic ulcer were randomized to receive the H 2 RAbased triple regimen (20 mg famotidine, 1.0 g amoxicillin and 0.4 g metronidazole) or the PPI-based triple regimen (20 mg omeprazole, 1.0 g amoxicillin and 0.4 g metronidazole) both twice daily for 1 or 2 weeks. Successful erad… Show more

“…Eradication of H. pylori can relieve the symptoms of gastrointestinal disorder and decrease the recurrence of ulcers. Increased evidence has shown that PPIs are more effective than H 2 RAs in H. pylori eradication and gastric acid suppression [26, 27]. PPIs inhibit the H + ,K + -ATPase activity of the proton pump, the final pathway for secretion of hydrochloric acid by parietal cells, and alter intragastric pH.…”

“…WM has been predominately used to treat GU, but the drugs available are limited in their efficacy. For instance, proton pump inhibitors are considered efficient drugs for PU treatment [ 31 ]. However, they have many adverse effects, such as headaches, rashes, and gastrointestinal disturbances.…”

“…Compared to strong interests in proton pump inhibitor‐based triple therapy, there is a little evidence available on eradication therapy including H 2 ‐receptor antagonist. There have been reports of excellent results acquired by H. pylori eradication using famotidine or other H 2 ‐receptor antagonists [15–20], most of which were carried out in Europe and the USA. Unfortunately very few studies were performed on Japanese patients [21,22].…”
