Comparison of Fecal Microbial Communities between White and Black Pigs

Abstract: Meat from black pigs (BP) is in high demand compared with that from modern white pig (WP) breeds such as Landrace pigs owing to its high quality. However, the growth rate of black pigs is slower than that of white pig breeds. We investigated differences in the fecal microbial composition between white and black pigs to explore whether these breeds differed in the composition of their gut microbial communities. The swine gut microbiota was investigated using Illumina's MiSeq-based sequencing technology by targe… Show more

“…Gln supplementation may ameliorate constipation by increasing the energy harvesting capacity by Firmicutes species [48]. Additionally, obese pigs had a higher abundance of Spirochaetes than lean pigs [49], and Bifidobacterium and Bacteroides species were significantly less abundant in feces from patients with functional constipation, as compared with healthy controls [8], which is in agreement with results of the present study. Human adult and infant distal gut microbiomes had significantly higher abundance of Actinobacteria than did the swine microbiome [50].…”

“…In addition, pigs of different breeds had a distinct gut microbiota composition ( Cheng et al., 2017 ). Guevarra et al. (2015) found that white-coloured breeds, such as Landrace, displayed a higher abundance of cellulolytic bacteria, which possibly indicates a higher fibre digestion efficiency.…”

“…In addition, Streptococcus , the dominant human milk bacteria [ 37 ], was thought to induce lactation mastitis [ 38 ]. Previous studies showed that decreased Spirochaetes abundance relieved constipation in mini sows [ 39 ] and that Spirochaetes abundance was higher in obese pigs compared with lean pigs [ 40 ]. Thus, these findings suggested that sows at different pregnancy and lactation stages show varied intestinal microbiota composition, which may depend on host metabolism at disparate physiological states.…”
