Comparison of Factor Analytic Results with Two-Choice and Seven-Choice Personality Item Formats

Abstract: A translated version of the Comrey Personality Scales (CPS) using a two-choice item format was administered to 159 male applicants for a motor vehicle operator's license in Israel. Total scores were computed for the 40 homogeneous item subgroups that define the eight personality factors in the taxonomy underlying the CPS. Factor analysis of the intercorrelations among these 40 subvariables resulted in substantial replication of factors found in a previous study employing a seven-choice item format. On the aver… Show more

“…Each eigenvalue of the Likert version was higher than the corresponding eigenvalue of the binary version, indicating more reliable components. However, the multiple-response version was only slightly superior to the binary version, which was a marked contrast to the findings of previous studies (Comrey, & Montag, 1982;Oswald & Velicer, 1980; press; Velicer & Stevenson, 1978). The results with respect to subject acceptance were more clear cut.…”

“…of stimulus materials requires further clarification. The present findings support the conclusions reached by Comrey and Montag (1982) rather than Velicer and Stevenson (1978) for the factor structure of personality items when the stimuli are unipolar ratings to personality statements.…”

“…Each of these ratings was done using a 6-point Likert-type response format (ranging from strongly disagree to strongly agree) instead of the true/false format usually used on the URES to allow for finer discriminations than would be possible using the dichotomous true-false format. Comrey andMontag (1982) andFtamer (1983) have demonstrated that Likert-type response formats are more reliable and valid than dichotomous true-false formats. examined these individual subscales with regard to perceived discrepancy and actual discrepancy.…”
